Broccoli The Superfood

We love adding to our list of superfoods and today Broccoli joins the list! (Try not to stick out your tongue in disgust). Broccoli is a part of the cruciferous family and is closely related to brussels sprouts, cauliflower and cabbage.

Not only is broccoli packed with fiber that reduces cholesterol levels in your body, it also contains a nutrient called kaempferol that reduces allergy reactions. Broccoli also contains glucoraphanin, which the body turns into sulforaphane, an anti-cancer compound. Helps to prevent cancer? Check. Fights allergies? Check. Lowers cholesterol? Check.

Still not convinced as to why broccoli is a superfood? Below, we list a couple more reasons why you should incorporate broccoli into your daily diet.

  • Broccoli contains large amounts of both Calcium and Vitamin K which are important to the health of your bones
  • Broccoli is a ‘good’ carb and has as much protein as a cup of rice with half the calories. It’s also high in fiber and prevents constipation and maintains low blood sugar
  • Broccoli prevents some damage done to blood vessel linings due to chronic blood sugar problems
  • Broccoli contains as much Vitamin C in one cup as an orange
  • Did we mention that it is low in calories? A cup of chopped broccoli is just about 31 calories.

All this sounds good but is useless if you don’t know how to incorporate it into your diet. Broccoli is a great side dish and can be added to just about anything. Add it to your brown rice, fish, chicken or pasta! You’ll feel good knowing that you’re eating a vegetable packed with so many nutrients.
